Tyler K. Fagan
Assistant Professor of Philosophy, Elmhurst University
About
Hi! I'm Ty Fagan, and I'm a philosopher. I work at Elmhurst University, a small liberal arts school west of Chicago, where I teach everything from formal logic to environmental ethics; I'm also the Director of our First-Year Seminar program. Originally from St. Louis, I got my undergraduate degrees at Truman State University, completed my Ph.D. at the University of Illinois in 2012 and have been at Elmhurst ever since. My areas of research expertise are in philosophy of mind, moral responsibility, and the somewhat fuzzily-defined areas known as neuroethics and neurolaw. What psychological capacities enable us to be free and responsible beings, and how do they develop as we mature? What kind of a "break" should juvenile offenders get? How is mental illness related to moral and legal responsibility? These are the kinds of questions I spend a lot of time thinking about nowadays.
I wrote a book called Responsible Brains (MIT Press, 2018) with my colleagues at Elmhurst, Bill Hirstein and Katrina Sifferd, and I've written elsewhere on topics including juvenile justice, international law, legal insanity, animal cognition, and the TV series The Wire.
